A Local's Guide to Falling in Love with Virginia's Capital.

It's a city that feels big enough to keep discovering, but small enough to feel like home. People wave. Neighbors know each other.

Local businesses remember your name. Community still matters here. There aren't many places that balance history, creativity, community, and quality of life quite like Richmond.

History and Community

🏛️ History

History isn't something you visit.

You live inside it.

  • St. John's Church
  • Hollywood Cemetery
  • The Capitol
  • Church Hill
  • Shockoe
  • Monument Avenue
  • The Valentine
  • Civil War history
  • Edgar Allan Poe Museum

Richmond's past spans the Revolutionary era, the Civil War, and the ongoing evolution of the city, with preserved architecture and museums throughout its neighborhoods.

🤝 Community: Where Richmond Feels Like Home

One of the things I hear most from people who move to Richmond is this:

"It feels like people actually know their neighbors here." And they're right.

Richmond has a way of making a city feel surprisingly small. Every neighborhood has its own personality, traditions, and gathering places. Everything from local coffee shops and farmers markets to block parties, community cleanups, and neighborhood festivals. It's the kind of place where you'll see families walking to the park, neighbors chatting on front porches, and small business owners greeting customers by name.

There's a genuine pride in supporting local here. Whether it's shopping at an independently owned bookstore, grabbing dinner at a neighborhood restaurant, or spending a Saturday morning at the farmers market, Richmond embraces the people and businesses that make the city unique. That culture of local support is one of the reasons so many small businesses thrive and why newcomers often feel welcomed so quickly.

Community also means showing up for one another. Throughout the year, Richmond residents volunteer in parks, plant trees, clean trails along the James River, support neighborhood organizations, and participate in service projects that help keep the city beautiful. It's not unusual to find neighbors working side by side to improve the places they call home

Location and Lifestyle

🚗 Location

One thing people underestimate...

Richmond is close to everything!

Roughly...

  • 2 hours to Washington, D.C.
  • 2 hours to the Blue Ridge Mountains
  • 2 hours to Virginia Beach
  • 1 hour to Williamsburg
  • 1 hour to Charlottesville
  • Roughly 2 hours Shenandoah

Weekend trips are easy, and Richmond itself offers plenty to do year-round.

🚶 Lifestyle

This is what people stay for.

You can have:

  • Walkable historic neighborhoods
  • Farmers markets
  • Local bookstores
  • Community festivals
  • Friendly coffee shops
  • Great schools nearby
  • Beautiful parks

It feels like a city...

Without always feeling hectic.

Distinct Neighborhoods

🌳 Neighborhoods

My favorite part? No two neighborhoods feel alike, and they all have personality!

The Fan.

Church Hill.

Bellevue.

Forest Hill.

Carytown.

Scott's Addition.

Midlothian.

Bon Air.

Mechanicsville.

Hanover.

Every neighborhood has its own character and charm, which means there's probably one that fits yours.
